Celebrating 10 Years of The Cube
It can be analogue or digital, pixel or grain, but always, it has to be life, cubed. Keeping in line with these principles, Max Mara enlisted the help of a group of talented photographers, to help celebrate The Cube’s 10th anniversary.
Paint-like effects for Hellen van Meene, off-centered perspectives for Max Farago, and playful lighting effects for Rinko Kawauchi.
Max Farago has been making images of The Cube since its inception ten years ago, always with an emphasis on the coat as a design object, and not a fleeting piece of fashion. This season, the approach was very different: no typical ‘photoshoot’ was scheduled. Instead, the coats were sent to Farago’s Los Angeles studio, and total creative freedom was given in the creation of the images.
The Cube is stacked like building blocks, only to topple with a mischievous push. “I chose to photograph the coats on my wife (Clara Cullen),” Farago says “and as the situation was less controlled, I was able to move the images in a different direction.
Rinko Kawauchi
Japanese photographer, Rinko Kawauchi, a profoundly thoughtful artist who wants us to see in her pictures “The beauty, the abundance and the ephemeral nature of the world.”
To celebrate The Cube’s tenth anniversary, Kawauchi, known for her square-format, Rolleiflex-lensed images, chose to photograph a close friend in the nature-abundant landscape of their native Japan.
The changing of the leaves and the setting of the sun are, after all, some of the most beautiful yet wholly ephemeral experiences.
Hellen van Meene
To celebrate The Cube’s tenth anniversary, van Meene began with a portrait, aspiring to do some-thing enduring and timeless, much like The Cube itself. With Rembrandt’s masterful use of light in mind, we see a young woman emerging from the darkness. Another image pays homage to the transformational spirit of The Cube, where multiple coats create a magical skirt, a celestial figure perched aloft.
